The Setup - The Pretense Of Normality

In the Netherlands we say “what’s good comes fast” and that’s what comes up into my mind when I think about the Setup. A year ago they released their debut EP ‘Nine Kinds Of Pain’ and within a year a whole full album is written and released. And considering the quality on the new one you can’t say that it's done in a hurry. Due to the mix it isn’t easy the first times to get close to the sound of ‘The Pretense Of Normality” but spinning the disc more and more brings you in the world of The Setup.
The (ex)-members of Circle and Thumbs Down bring their new school hardcore hard and a right in your face. The most remarkable thing on this disc is the coherence between the songs. It seems that before they’ve recorded they really knew how to order their songs. The thirty three minutes are a musical battlefield of hope, frustrations and releasing anger played with intensity that you don't see much in hardcore nowadays. The mix of fast driven hardcore riffs, crushing breakdowns and dissonant guitar parts brings an impressive dark vibe. Listen to samples in the first song and closing anthem “Black Water” and you'll know exactly what I mean. After a lot of spins all of sudden you discover more and more on this disc. Check the melodic riffs that are on the background: some people will say that’s a bad decision but it completes the sound of these Belgians definitely. It’s difficult in hardcore to convince the listener in every track of a full length but The Setup succeed. That’s why I don’t mention which songs are the most remarkable because they are all good. The reason they don’t catch the full score is because I probably think that on a possible next full length this five piece could top their creations they’ve spread on ‘The Pretense Of Normality’.
