v/a - 4-way split

Impure Muzik

This record seems to be out on the streets for quite some time now, but since the incredibly nice Joss Impure gave me this record together with some other records, I will still review this one too.

First band on this 4-way split is Gameness, a band from France that sounds like a more over the top JR Ewing with French vocals. The interludes remind me a bit of Refused. They don’t really sound the same, but they have that same tension. The music is pretty heavy and I guess with a better production they can make a great record.

When the second Gameness song is over, Belgium’s Amen Ra starts the first of their 2 songs. And they bring you exactly what you expected, heavy sludgy guitars and a singer screaming out in agony. I really like their songs and it’s especially the intense singing that makes these songs stand out. One of the Amen Ra tracks wasn’t released before (at least it was at the time this record came out), so that’s an extra reason for all you Amen Ra fanatics to get this record.

Next band is Gantz, a French band again, with Joss Impure on guitar. After two heavy and aggressive bands, Gantz is a bit more melodic and emotional. It’s a bit like Isis, sometimes even a bit like Cult Of Luna. After a long intro, that starts boring me after a while, in both songs Gantz proves to be a really energetic band. This might not be my favourite style, but Gantz plays it right.

I already knew the next band Vuur from their split 7” with Seein’ Red. On all three tracks (they are the only band to play 3 songs), the band is heavy and intense, a bit like a mix of Botch, Born Dead Icons and Isis. The songs have a great raw productions and biting political lyrics. "Dying Breed" is a great song, heavy and intense, best song of this record to me.

All in all this is a great compilation to check out four screamo-bands from France and Belgium.
