Trivium - Shogun

Roadrunner

Ever since they released their debut album on Lifeforce Records, it was pretty obvious that Trivium was going to be big. And now they are. Their previous album ’The Crusade’ was called a Metallica rip-off by some, but on ‘Shogun’ the band definitely proves to have a sound of their own. Musically it’s a mixture of their previous albums ‘Ember To Inferno’, ’Ascendancy’ and ‘The Crusade’. Each of the 11 songs is perfectly balanced and there really is no weak track among them. Pretty long songs once again. The average song length is 6 minutes, with the closing title track as the maximum (12 minutes).

There are some new elements in the sound (like the southern metal influences in ‘Down From The Sky’), but it always sounds like Trivium. As guitarist Corey Beaulieau says: ‘Shogun’ is a culmination of the growth that Trivium has gone through in the last couple of years. Of course you can still here the influences of Metallica and other favourite bands of the Trivium members if you really want to, but the typical mix of riffage and melody immediately tells you you’re dealing with Trivium here.

Closing track ‘Shogun’ lasts for 12 minutes, but there’s never a dull moment because of the diversity in this song. It’s really interesting for the whole 12 minutes. This is also typical for the whole album, because the band really thought over every part of every song on it. I can’t draw any other conclusion than to label ‘Shogun’ as a really good record. There was a lot of pressure on the band because of the many critical fans and journalists, but these guys from Florida pulled it off. Great job!
