With the band name No Hawaii and the hilarious album title ‘Bruce Lee in Your Brain’ you’ll expect a crappy mixture of ska and punkrock. When the first song “Al Final Todos Pagamos” kicks in, something different pops out of your speakers. This song title might be a little bit confusing because you’ll expect a band from a Spanish speaking country; No Hawaii exists out of five Swedish men. In the eight minutes of the first track Breach, The Ocean and The Melvins are jamming together with Mike Patton on vocals. In the coffee break of the jam session The Mars Volta is visiting the rehearsal room and spontaneously adds some tunes.
In the other two songs (or three if you also take the hidden bonus track in account) this wonderful combination doesn’t work for one hundred percent. Especially the out of range melodic vocals in the middle part of “Vessel” make you frow your brows. Without acting like a complete freakshow No Hawaii is pulling from various influences although sometimes they may go too far, except for the bonus track what seems to be a total Breach awe and is much more conventional. Nevertheless this EP (released last year) is a fresh starting point from a band that can develop into an act that moves as a chameleon in the modern heavy music landscape.
