You can’t talk about nineties hardcore and punk without mentioning the 924 Gilman *) and Bay Area scene. Bands like Operation Ivy, Green Day, Rancid and Jawbreaker immediately pop up in your mind but their lesser known but equally amazing peers such as Isocracy, Crimpshrine, Filth and Blatz are easily overlooked. I remember raiding the Da Capo record store in Utrecht for Lookout! releases and getting insanely drunk with my buddies listening to Isocracy’s “Bedtime for…” and Filth’s “Live the chaos”.
The Shit Split was originally released in 1991 by Lookout! Records but had been out of print for awhile. Alternative Tentacles, who also did great re-issue for The Subhumans, decided to re-release the original split together with the entire discographies of both bands on two CD’s. Filth is a (crust) punk tornado while Blatz can be described as a trashier X-Ray Spex. The Filth disc is my favourite. An essential release for any Lookout! fanatic!
*) If you want to know more about Gilman, I advise you to check out the book “924 Gilman”, a collection of stories compiled by Brian Edge. A truly inspiring book.
