Rectify - Heartbeat
posted by: Bayonetwork on 26 June 2009

Garden Of Exile
I felt like I was being thrown back to the eighties when the first tones of Heartbeat kicked in. There was thrash in the great Slayer tradition coming from my speakers. Quickly I sat back and was looking forward for the rest of Rectify's second album.
Already in song number two, Two Fingers, it became clear that there was another influence very prominent on this album. They were able to recreate the same mean and vicious atmosphere that metalcore bands such as Arkangel, Lenght Of Time or Kickback had in the 90'ies. That very mean and aggressive sound. With a lesser paced tempo, that suits this type of music very well. Rectify handles a great diversity, which is not a given when it comes to such bands. Lava Red for example is a very fast, nervous and angry outing, while Smell The Change has a groovier, more melodic Lamb Of God influence. I don't really understand the added value of the intermezzo which is track number seven. It takes the vibe out of the album and is quite boring actually. The slow built up towards No One Can Escape It didn't gave me the feeling to get of this boredom. but when that song really started off, I realised I was wrong. They picked up where they left before the intermezzo and just kept wrecking on towards the end of the album.
Rectify has no problems offering variation in between songs, but still has some work left on providing the same level of diversity in the songs themselves. The structures and built ups are very similar. After a few spins this gets more and more noticeable. But this is actually a minor point of critique, because Heartbeat is far above average and will definitely get it's fair share of spins here.
