Sacramento's Hoods strike again with a new album entitled Pit Beast. Overall, the album's got a solid feel, but when one dissects the record in a more accurate way, some negative aspects are discovered as well. First of all, it's just too fragmented. Hoods can shift shapes between Blood For Blood, Soilent Green, some melodic Rivalry Records-style band and a heavy mosh outfit, all during one song. And additionally, the lyrics are pretty cliché, sometimes even infantile (i mean, a song title like "Punk's Dead, Emo Kids Next" and a chorus like "I wanna circle pit, I wanna circle pit, mosh, mosh, mosh, mosh!" are way over the line). And recording Agnostic Front's Friend or Foe isn't only unnecessary. It's synonymous for a serious lack of creativity. However, even if I wanted to, I can't label Hoods' new release as 'bad'. The incoherent writing and overdose of clichés don't undo the fact that Hoods have managed to capture their energy and sincerity on disc once again. Hoods are sure to please their long-time fans and new kids who are into bands like Death Before Dishonor (the contemporary DBD signed by Bridge Nine that is), Hatebreed and Blood for Blood. In the end, it's all a matter of taste, of course.
