Boozed - One mile

Chorus of One

The full-length ‘One Mile’ by Germany’s Boozed has been out since early May, and the young band’s previous efforts were all well received in Europe. The twelve songs on this third record are supposed to be the step towards maturity that Boozed wanted to make (at least according to the promo-sheet), and I am therefore eager to put this one into my record player.

Opener ‘Save me’ indicates the direction where the bands wants to head: diverse rock (‘n roll) with a bit of an edge to it, combining elements of The Hellacopters and the Stones. The music is characterized by a diversity of tempo’s, the singer has this rough and versatile voice that fits this style of music, and all musicians seem to be masters of their instruments. The album is rather diverse through the use of female backing-vocals in several songs, organs, and of guest appearances like that of Nicke Andersson (ex-Hellacopters) on ‘Circus’. Some AC/DC like sounds blast out of your speaker in ‘Speak by the haze’, after which the tempo goes down during the ballad-like ‘Easy’ (the one song on the album that doesn’t really appeal to me). But the tempo also goes up in my favorite song ‘Hypnotic magnetic’, which can be typified as a cross-breeding of Peter Pan Speedrock and the Ramones. The production varies from clean and polished to gritty, thus strengthening the different styles incorporated in the different songs.

On previous albums, it seemed like the age of the band was one of their biggest selling points (the band was on average only 20 years old when they had already released two full-lengths), but ‘One Mile’ is a mature and (the third time I use this word) diverse record that will appeal to a lot of people that like good old honest rock with a sleazy edge to it!
