Spoil Engine - Antimatter

Roadrunner

It's going fast for the Belgian guys (and their Dutch singer) in Spoil Engine. They were already the best selling Belgian metalband with the release of their debut Skinnerbox V.07, but now they're even the first Belgian band on Roadrunner in 20 years.

I guess they had to be a bit nervous when they officially released Antimatter a week ago on The Shelter - stage at Pukkelpop. Although there were signs that they didn't need to. The first single Breathe already aired a few weeks in Belgium's biggest alternative hitlist 'De Afrekening'. In comparison with their debut, Antimatter is less straight forward, but thanks to a bigger sound it's still very impressive. It reminds me of a lot of other Roadrunner bands. Think Machine Head with a vocalist similar to Corey Taylor, some old Sepultura and a little hinch of Killswitch Engage for the modern touch. Antimatter became a very solid record, filled with aggressive riffs and groovy drumparts. The extra melody they added makes sure this album doesn't take too long to get used to. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of layering going in, so that you can always keep on discovering. Just listen to songs like In The Line Of Fire or The New Disease to have some great examples. Not only did the musicians took it to the next level. Singer Niek expanded his voice and incorporates a lot more melody and variation. As I mentioned before, his voice gets really reminiscent of Corey Taylor.

Taking everything into account, you could actually say Spoil Engine wrote an album that has international potential. For that matter I think it's a pity that the lyrics are a bit of lesser quality than the music. They resort a bit too much to the use of 'fuck', 'shit' and other nice words to have those intelligent lyrics that are mentioned in the biography. Still, this is one fine record.
