Moray Firth - A Paradigm Shift

posted by: maurice on 13 March 2010

Own release

The Moray Firth is a roughly triangular inlet (or firth) of the North Sea, north and east of Inverness, which is in the Highland council area of Scotland. The band Moray Firth is from France and plays melodic Death Metal with Doom and progressive elements. The album ‘A Paradigm Shift’ is already more than two years old so the sound on it might be a bit outdated.

Although the ideas are poorly executed, unlike their influences Opeth or My Dying Bride, I have sympathy for Moray Firth. In “Dusk Trail” or “The Storm Room” they try something different and the guitar effects in “Vanished” show a melancholic atmosphere.

According to their Myspace they see ‘A Paradigm Shift’ as a transformation, the metamorphosis of an old way of thinking to another. I hope they will succeed in this change because a long song like “Of Vampire and Men” suffers from too many ideas, the weak speaking vocals and the stiff drums. Also the album just takes too long with a song like “Even Death May Die”. I hope the band develops and maybe they come up with better structured songs on a possible release this or next year.
