The Empire Shall Fall is the new band featuring Jesse Leach, former Killswitch Engage vocalist and for many still the better singer than currently Howard Jones. It's great to see such a talented singer back at the forefront with a new project. Seemless went on hiatus, but couldn't really convince me all that much.
This debut record Awaken is something very different than Seemless was. You could actually say The Empire Shall Fall picks things up where Jesse left them with Killswitch Engage after Alive Or Just Breathing. None the least lyricwise. All the lyrics have that same mindset, which has become a Jesse Leach trademark of sort. Always having this hopeful content and belief in the power of the humand mind, while remaining critical for the current state of the world. This time around, there are a lot of political critique in his lyrics as well. I've always enjoyed listening to his words and it's no different on Awaken.
But it would be unfair to completely compare the music of this band to Alive Or Just Breathing, although there are similarities The Empire Shall Fall has a more progressive character. With several influences in their music, they easily range from soothing parts to pure destructive thrash breaks. It's this variety that makes this album one that really grows on you. I think that a lot of people who grew out of the Killswitch Engage type of music after Jesse left, could find themselves a more than worthy follower or substitute.
