The ice age has come to an end. Thank you all for your support over the years. It's been fun, but it's time for someone else to take over. Head over to SWNK for your daily dose of hardcore music. While you're there, check out the interview with the founders of Asice.net. - David

Sparrow Falls - Tides

posted by: Joost78 on 9 September 2010

Agent Cooper

Sparrow Falls from Maastricht was formed in 2005. They released a self-titled EP a year later, then toured quite a bit, but after guitarist and songwriter Ed van Hees was in a heavy accident in the Spring of 2008, the band had to be put on hold for a while. Now they're back with their first full length, 'Tides'.

The band cites Hot Water Music as a main influence, which they clearly are, but Sparrow Falls certainly doesn't just copy their sound. They merely use it as a starting point and take it into some interesting directions from there on.

Although this album has a playing time of 45 minutes, which is fairly long for a punk rock record, it effortlessly managed to hold my attention from the first minute to the last. At times it's even quite overwhelming. With an incredible amount of passion, drive and emotion, a whole lot of gorgeous melodies and a few creative musical surprises here and there, these guys work their way through ten truely excellent songs.

At first I wanted to write that this is the best new Dutch punk rock album that I've heard in a while, but on second thought I think I can leave out the word Dutch.

@ Stengels.
