For Blood And Vengeance - All bets are off

Dutch hardcore outfit “For Blood And Vengeance” sure knows how to draw attention to themselves. ”All bets are off” is the band’s debut release (as far as I know), but instead of recording a demo-CD, CD-R or 7”, the band decided to put their 7 songs on a USB-stick. Original, catching the eye, and most importantly, this allowed the band to put a bunch of extra’s on the release as well. Cool!

On to the music: FBAV delivers pounding metalcore in the vein of Donnybrook and Trapped under ice. Expect mostly mid-tempo tough metalcore, typified by some gang vocals, breakdowns, tight riffs and all other ingredients that are common in this subgenre. The 7 songs on this release are not overly original (hell, even the title was already used by one of The Netherlands’ most well-known hardcore bands), but I do like the groove that is present in most of the songs. The songs fly by and do not bore me for a minute, which is rare for a starting band in this genre. Third song “Take a Bullet” has some guitar-sounds that even remind me of the older Biohazard, which is always cool. The sound-mix of this debut is a bit thin, which is unfortunate, as this kind of releases is often strengthened by a brutal full sound. Also, the vocals could do with a bit more dynamics and power, but that leaves some room to further impress me with future releases!

Although the music on this debut USB-stick will not give you a new take on hardcore, it is definitely worth your while if you are into the “hard” of “hardcore”. Make sure to check out Flevoland’s finest when they play in a city near you, and pick up this original (in terms of the used medium) and aggressive debut!
