Midnight Menace - The Static State

I liked Midnight Menace's previous EP 'Fences' a whole lot. It contained some really solid melodic punk rock, not very original, but it was energetic, enthousiastic, sparkling, and the vocals were truely outstanding.

After such a promising debut, I've got to admit that I'm a little bit dissapointed with this seven song follow-up. Heleen Tichelaar is still one of the best Dutch female vocalists in rock music, and new guitarist Nangko Verboon turns out to be a valuable addition as he provides some excellent backup vocals. And the music sounds even more professional this time. But it's also slower, slicker, less energetic and simply more generic. The songs are solid, tight and flawlessly performed melodic (punk) rock, but it's nothing I haven't heard a zillion times before.

Although this CD doesn't rock my world, I do believe that with their professional and accessible sound and outstanding vocals, Midnight Menace might be just a strong hit single away from joining the ranks of successful Dutch rock/punk pop bands such as Destine and Stereo.
