Kerretta - Saansilo

Does anyone know what a "Saansilo" is? It reminds me of a "Graansilo" (the Dutch word for grain silo). However, Kerretta from New-Zealand is still the post-metal band from their ‘Vilayer’ debut. Isis should have been scared of losing their throne, were they still around. Both bands share the same production approach (especially the clean guitar sound and the drums). The drum patterns are also similar; a difference lies in the fact that Kerretta is completely instrumental.

The previous album had been lauded and nominated for the 2010 Taite Music Prize - the New Zealand equivalent of the UK's Mercury Awards for song-writing. I don't know if Kerretta won the price but on both albums Kerretta understands how to the structure the heaviness, melancholy and melodies in a dynamical way. Just listen to "By the Throats" or "Shepherds Thread" and get impressed by Kerretta. The seven songs are even better shaped than on the debut album.

Just as on Jakob’s albums (also from New Zealand) you hear the accuracy and concentration that’s needed to create the high level songs. Seemingly easy, the sounds divert between ambient, rock and metal. Kerretta also opts for unusual sounds that pop up once in while. These surprising moments keep the listener sharp, just as the subtle changes in texture and the mood of the song do.

The best is saved for last in “Kept from the Brilliance of the Outer World” and “Onyxia”; astounding drum work, brilliant guitar effects and intriguing melodies grow into two fantastic songs. “Saansilo” has outperformed “Vilayer” completely.
