White Darkness is the nihilistic and creepy project of Jason Köhnen known as Bong-Ra who is also the bass player of the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. After a debut a couple of years ago, he shows he has made amazing steps with this dark ritual.
It's different than some dark ambient artists (think Lustmord or Nordvargr) and with the typical laidback approach known from his other projects, Köhnen creates a niche in the dark ominous musical landscape. It’s creepy and eerie music, and unsurprisingly he reaches this atmosphere with his jazzy style of playing. The subtle drums, combined with the dark electronic sounds, give 'Tokage' a chaotic unpleasant side; kinda like if you are on the run for a serial killer in the dark.
It really becomes scary in "FF0000 Rituals" and the last track "The Volume of the Enclosure" with the sick female vocals from Rachael Kozak (known from Belphegor and Hekate). It feels like White Darkness is remixing a Khanate song. Now and then her whispering voice returns; together with the piano in “You Are The Interactive Data Mutant.sHIVER/sHIVER//sHIVER///” this song is one of the best on ‘Tokage’. Next up RMNNTs shows the neoclassical side of White Darkness and is the most positive song, even Mogwai influenced. A bit confusing since ‘Tokage’ is a strange and unpleasant voyage towards dark territories.
