Light The Fuse 2007
posted by: Roy on 6 March 2007

For this edition of Light The Fuse we asked two people in the audience (Some Wouter and Jonas) to write a review about this festival and they did a great job. We also asked Niels from Straight A's some questions to see how he experienced it all.
For this years Light The Fuse Rob decided to go for a whole different approach. Still only choosing bands from Europe, this time all the bands that played were just starting out and most of them only had a demo out. The whole fest was held inside the Innocent, instead of the Metropool that was only half-full last year. This new concept turned out to be a good choice, because LTF ‘07 was a really cool weekend that gave the opportunity to a lot of people to discover new bands.

Rush ’n Attack kicked off the Friday. A cool set of their own stuff, like the smash-hit Alchol, and a Black Flag and Angry Samoans cover. Immediately got the crowd the moving to their beat.
Next up Brat Pack, a band that delivered a great demo in the vein of RKL and old NOFX so you know you can expect some fast punk with cool sing-a-longs once in a while. A good show, although they haven’t been around that long they sure know how to play.

The last band I saw this Friday was Cracks In The Wall. Not that tight, I don’t think this was one of their better shows. They played some new tunes, but the demo songs are still preferred by me. I like the vocals a lot more on those. And I hope there will be some more solo’s from David on the new songs, cause they kill!
The next day promised to be a good one with a lot of bands that haven’t played much in NL. It all started of with Room 13. Although the Niels himself wasn’t that happy with the demo compared to the new songs, I really think that it’s one of the better demo’s from NL lately. A lot of mistakes during the performance, but hey, its punk!

Citizens Patrol hit the stage next. Cool band from Limburg, with really good lyrics. The singer sometimes had to be reminded what the songs, that they were going to play, were but that’s what you get when you play in more than one band I think. Really tight and good show with a Void and Bad Religion cover thrown in the mix.
Straight A’s left the first demo for what it was, playing only one song from it. All the songs that are on the split tape (with Remain) were played instead and some of the upcoming 7”. A cool Outbreak vibe, especially in a song like Trash Hard Or Die. First band that really got the crowd moving.

After this it was the turn for the two bands from the UK, Deal With It and Dirty Money. I don’t really like the vocals in both bands, but they should be the best that the UK has to offer at the moment. It has to be said DWI had some great grooves and DM an awesome intro. They both played more than decent sets and got the crowds attention with covers from the Cro-Mags, Antidote and No Warning (Niels A’s talked them into doing those).
After a short break Black Haven played. It reminded me a lot of Rise And Fall during Hellmouth. So keep an eye on this band, cause I think they are going to be big and you’ll be able to say you liked the demo better.

Next up, Hoods Up. German Straight Edge. They brought some of their friends along that kept the floor moving. The band moved a lot on stage, but because of that the singer wasn’t really constant on the vocals. At the end of their set they got Bigma on the stage to do Mainstrike’s No Passing Phase (flashback moment to LTF ’05)!
After this I became really siked because I knew Vogue was going to hit the stage. Best new band from Belgium for sure. Just listen to the demo if you don’t believe it. And this show was tight as hell! And that for a second show. All the songs from the demo came by and I think even some songs from the High Heels 7” that the singer (Jan) put out. Insane show they put up, especially Jan. They can keep coming over any time they want.

The last band I saw this day was One Voice, the new Straight Edge promise from Belgium. A couple of kids coming from bands like Turn The Screw and Mumbo Jumbo. Jack Shit presented himself as a good frontman, and got everybody’s attention with their demo songs and the Alone In A Crowd cover. They also played some tracks from the upcoming 7” on Crucial Response. If you’re into Youth crew you should definitely check this out.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ve never been too the Light The Fuse festival but the good stories about this festival and about the location Innocent made me the choice to give it a chance. So I hooked up with one of my best (drinking) mates to go too Hengelo. A friend of us we also know from hardcore and punk shows was joining so it was a cool team.
We had a crashingplace in Hengelo, at some guys that call themselves ‘the drunken locals’.
I thought people in Holland could not be any more drunk than we do so I was a little bit siked about it.
After this weekend I am convinced that some people could be MORE drunk than me and my friends. Jesus Christ. More about that later.
So we we’re welcomed at their place and we checked out the living room where we would stay. There were three couches so we decided who was picking which couch. My couch was pretty good. The rest of the living room was a big mess but like we would give a shit about it.
The dudes from xdlx were just a bunch of cool guys and it was going to be a hell of (party) weekend.
Day 1 – Friday 2nd March 2007
After we dropped our stuff and meeting the guys we walked together too the Innocent venue. Pretty cool and small venue. Low stage, little bar and everywhere you look stickers from hardcore, metal and punk bands. Me like! Shortly after we arrived and drank our first beer the bands started to play.
THE BANDS:
Rush And Attack:
Nice dudes that play some pretty cool tunes. First band on the festival, the audience was not loud, moshing or diving. But heey, they played a good set. You can hear they make some progress. The style they play reminds me of Paint It Black but a little bit more raw. Good hardcore-punk that is energetic and rocks.
Bratpack:
The question is if I’m detached in my opinion because I know these dudes very well. But heey, what else is new in the hardcore punk scène.
They started with a little bit a bad sound because I didn’t hear the great riffs in the first song ‘See If We Care’. After a few minutes the sound improved and you could hear what it is all about with this band: great dubble riffs and leads with a lot of melody. After a few songs the snare of one of the guitarists broke. Simply fixed with help from the dudes from Rush And Attack.
But it was like a curse because shortly after the guitar was fixed the kicker for the bassdrum broke down. RnA was there again to save the show. Great!

Cracks In The Wall:
I have seen this band a few times and I always liked the songs and interaction. But the problem was the drummer wasn’t always that tight. A pity because the fast songs need a very good drummer. This show was better than I’ve ever seen from this band. They played very convincingly, although it will never become one off my favorite bands.
Damaged Goods:
Before I went to the festival I checked out some songs from this band on their Myspace site.
I was not very keen on it. But the show was pretty cool and for the first time this day the audience gave a band some reaction. First dives of the weekend were noticed and sing-a-longs were made. Cool band.

Your Mistake:
This band was a little bit strange in the line-up of the first day. We all could see some bands this day that are growing very fast in the Benelux with a style of fast hardcore punk
But this band was heavier and more into breakdowns and moshparts. I had seen them a few weeks ago and I could conclude that this band was ‘not my cup of tea’. This show was different. It was like they played a little bit faster and there was also some cool reaction from the audience. This band reminds me off the old Madball which is a compliment. They also played a Biohazard cover, that’s also good.
Because of the cancellation of The Italion Stallion this was the last band of the first day. And I think an good one to end it!
Afterparty:
The dudes where we would stay took us downtown too Hengelo, to 2 places: first the ‘st. Louis’. A cool bar with some pool tables and where we could hangout. No dancing but just chilling. The guys from Rush And Attack and Brat Pack were also there so it became very pleasant. At 2 o’ clock the boss from this place came to us and said we must get out because they were going to close. The lights did go on and a few minutes later we went to our second place: dancing and hang out place: ‘the Nul’ which means in English: ‘Place Zero’ or something like that. When we came in people were just dancing at the floor and hanging around.
We must be drunk already because 30 minutes later we had conquered the dance floor and we were moshing on Rage Against The Machine. Anyone remember the correct song of RATM?
About 5 a.m. o’clock we went home. But not before we went to a place for a meal. Totally wasted and drunk we ate our meals at home. Waking up with a huuuuge hangover and a headache that was like coming out of hell. Great!

Day 2 – Saturday 3rd March 2007
Like I said: with a big headache and a feeling of total destruction we woke up and drank our first cup off coffee. After that, one my friends was going to get some breakfast / lunch. That was the most greatest gift I’ve ever seen. I was in totally desperate need for some vitamins!
But hell, they worked and shortly after that we could walk into the Innocent venue to drink our first beer of the day.
Special note for Pizza-punk because he was taking ‘a nap’ with a girl he just met that night. Jokes were flying around and everyone was like: ‘Hihihi’.
We also discussed about each others experiences with other people that snore. ‘Not to do!’
‘I pull it baaad!’ ‘I threw beer lids at Spoes’ head so he would stop!’ Great conversations.

THE BANDS:
The second day we started with Room 13: I’ve seen this band like most bands on this festival a few times before: I can remember they had a very good sound and played very aggressive. Fast hardcore punk (what else is new?) and a great singer.

Citiziens Patrol: This band has the same singer as Brat Pack but they play a bit faster and ‘snottier’ than BP. You could see and hear the singer had a hard job this show because of the show with his other band the day before and a hard night after that.
But since they play shows on regular base they almost always play a Bad Religion cover. ‘We’re All Going To Die’ is being performed in much a faster tempo than the original song.
Great cover and the first moves from the audience were shown.
The Straight A’s: When I entered the Innocent I could hardly get in because of the fuss. With the first song the crowd was immediately going nuts and singer Niels was acting like a mad bull on stage. The guitarists changed after every song their places, so the show had besides a fucked up atmosphere also a hilarious tone. Cool show!

Black Haven: Because we had to eat something I totally missed this band. I heard they sounded a bit like Rise And Fall which is one my favorite bands from the Benelux. Hope to see them any time.
Deal With It: Also missed due our meal. A pity! I heard they played a Cro Mags and No Warning cover. Damn it, missed!

Dirty Money: When this band starts to play the crowd immediately is going for reaction. The groupies from this band plus Niels Straight A’s were moshing and diving like it was the end of the world. The vocals were a bit strange and not the strongest part of the band. The interaction with the audience was also not very strong but they played a moderate show.
Hoods Up: This German straight edge band was pretty good in what they do. It was a little bit too cliché for me but they played tight. The drummer was hitting pretty hard! And they played also a very good cover of Mainstrike ‘No Passing Phase’ with the original singer of Mainstrike on vocals. The crowd was completely going nuts and I believe this was one of the highlights of Light The Fuse 2007.

Vogue: Many people were ‘siked’ about this band from Belgium. I think they played a fine show but I was not that kind siked about this band than other people used to be. Just regular hardcore punk with loud and fucked up vocals. References with Negative Approach were coming up. Off course, that is always good!
One Voice: Cool show but after 2 days of bands and partying I was getting a little bit too wasted an tired. So I can hardly remember anything from this show. Did they play any covers? Anyone?!
Said And Done: This band from ‘Noord-Brabant’ (a state in the Netherlands) was the last band of the festival. You might think the crowd was tired and fed up. In some way that was true but with some songs there were some guys moshing upfront and taking some action.
What always surprises me when I see this band, is that they play very tight. Their so called ‘Cro-Mags, Madball, Crown Of Thornz- style’ needs to be played tight and they do it. First cover: I can’t remember. Anyone? Second: Hard Times by the almighty Cro-Mags. And yes, hard times it surely was.

Afterparty:
The second night we went partying in downtown Hengelo. When we came home, some of the dudes that lives in the xdlx house was sleeping at the couch in the living room. So some of his home mates were joking about him, putting toilet papers on him with peanut butter and we also placed a toilet brush on his head and made pictures of him. Very hilarious and ashamed. So a warning for you all: never go to sleep if you have friends that will fuck you up if they like and make fun of you while your sleeping.
After this fun and drinking some beers we went again to the st. Louis. But it didn’t take long before the lights went on and we were asked to go out.
Just like the night before we went to the Nul. In polonaise we walked to this place and there we would have another wasted night with shiploads of beer and people from the venue that were asking us to stop dropping glasses on the ground and moshing in the venue on the tunes of Motörhead – Ace Of Spades and Machine Head – Dividian.
About 5 o’clock we went home, but not before we took something to eat with us and some beers for the last hours of this great weekend. Before sleeping, there was another guy that was not able to react anymore and totally passes out in the living room. So he became the following victim of writings on his body and fries in his nose. After a hour of fun we put him in his bed and closed the door.
Next day we woke up in the afternoon and we were still wasted. Very tired but with great memories we walked to the train station and went home.
Great weekend with very nice people, great moments, great bands, a lot of alcohol and food. If next year the line up will be as nice as this year I am going to be there for sure.

Interview with Niels from Straight A's
Ok, let’s start off with this one. What did you think of the concept of this year, embracing the original approach without the big names?
I think it was really cool. Of course i was stoked to the bone because I had to play with my own band on this year’s edition. It was also very cool to play with bands that don’t play the local venue every month and attract like 200 visitors. I was really curious about the bands I already checked out on the internet or purchased demo releases of. Having seen them live, i must say they’ve all made a very good impression. The year 2007 starts great already and bears a lot of promises, out with the old, in with the new!
The whole weekend was awesome of course, but what were your personal highlights?
First of all my buddy Bas, he got laid! But the whole weekend was a blast, one big highlight, and it just got cooler every hour. The first day just began great with Brat Pack and Rush 'n Attack . Not to forget the Circle Jerks cover Damaged Goods played, with whom I did guest vocals. Furthermore, Your Mistake surprised me with a very solid show. And then the afterparty started, it was legendary! Staying in one bar till you get kicked out, just to go to the next, awesome! I fell flat while walking to it, but who cares, haha.
Hoods Up played a Mainstrike cover, two No Warning covers were played during the weekend, my favorite band of all time!
All the enthousiastic people that came to see all these bands, and went completely mad to it! I think this was the coolest thing for the foreign bands that didn’t know what to expect. Most of ‘em got a really good response, also from the other bands. I think this is one of the coolest things. I mean, you’re all in this thing together. You know, it was just one great party without any downside.
Last but not least, the chills were running down my spine during Mainstrike's No Passing Phase, played by Hoods Up.
The atmosphere was great indeed! The Straight A’s show was also legendary, with all those line up changes DURING the set. Do you think it was one of the best A’s gigs up til now?
I don’t know. We think we played our best show immediately after each one, you know. So for now, this was the best one so far! I’m really siked for the things that will happen after our 7” is released! I hope we left a good impression. Mad props to Pitter ’n Attack and Karst for filling in on guitar and Rudie for being stand-in bassist!
Are you getting near to doing an English tour, with the new found friendship with the English bands on LTF?
That would be het next dream to come true, a tour in the first place would be a dream come true! For now, nothing’s certain. But i’m definitely going to try to make that happen! I’ve heard very good stories about shows in England. It would be really cool. Those dudes in Deal With It and Dirty Money were awesome. They think the same about hardcore as we do, and they play great music!
Any last words?
I hope a lot of people who saw the bands this weekend go like: “Damn, these bands are cool, I’m going to book them”. All those bands deserve the support. 2007 will be a great year I guess, and a big shout out to Rob and the others that put up Light The Fuse!
