Incubate confuses and amazes you again!

posted by: maurice on 11 September 2009

Hell yeah, Incubate again came up with an amazing line up. Some you might know, others are still unknown to you and a bunch even to us. We've chosen some bands you should definitely see if you like the heavy and/or experimental acts.

For those who don't know, Incubate is not just only a music festival, it's an art festival. This Incubate special deals about the heavier and weird stuff however I strongly suggest to also watch the revolutionary and controversial artist Herman Nitsch. Nitsch juxtaposed slaughtered animal intestines with quasi-religious icons such as staged crucifixions, satirizing and questioning the moral ethics of atavistic religion and sacrifice. His art is known all over the world and his work is often discussed in the world.

He's performing every day on the festival so don't miss it. It’s not known if he’s gonna make abstract splatter paintings or will combine slaughtered animals, red fruits, music, dancing, and active participants in a ritualistic play. Maybe he will do both or just something completely different. However, back to the music.

Tuesday 15-9
Sunday 13th the festival starts but Tuesday 15th is the first day interesting bands are playing. In the V39 the trio Drums Are For Parades will overwhelm you with a heavy mix of hardcore, noiserock and metal. Belgium always came up with good and interesting bands so I bet these guys from Gent won't disappoint you. Future of the Left is following shortly after and with McClusky members in the ranks you are guaranteed with prominent vocals, staccato rhythms and awesome songs. People into the Jesus Lizard or Helmet must give this a try.

Future of the Left

Wednesday 16-9

Raging madness from the grindcore/hardcore combo FUBAR is the perfect medicine after a long day at the office. They will blow away your stress and tiredness. If that's not enough the nuclear bomb Anaal Nathrakh will shred your ears with this exclusive gig. They combine Black Metal with Grindcore without forgetting great melodies in their whirlwind approach of extreme metal.

Thursday 17-9

This is a day-off for the fanatics of the heavy and ordinary stuff. For those into Dubstep, grime and Hip Hop I suggest to take a look at the V39: Noiz Boiz, Suckafish P and Boef en de Gelogeerde Aap are performing this night. In the same style in the Paradox Bass Clef is starting off the evening.

Friday 18-9

In the Little Devil the British band Manatees will make your world black with their trance inducing mixture of drones, sludge and doom. In the beginning of this year ‘Icarus the Sun Climber’ is being released; a darker and bleaker continuation of their old work. Closing off in the Extase is the Irish black metal band Altar of Plagues, they were asked by the mighty Mayhem to join them on a few dates on the European mainland in 2008. Last year they promoted their EP ‘Sol’. With a sound similar to Wolves in the Throne Room these young guys not only impressed the crowd but also the American label Profound Lore that released their album ‘’White Tomb’ this year.

Saturday 19-9

The most interesting day will be Saturday. The avant-garde metal act Kayo Dot with a lot of jazz influences will help you to awake early in the evening. Just before them Eindhoven’s The Risque will perform in the Cul de Sac. A powerful mix of indierock and punkrock with outstanding vocals is what you get.

Still interested in the blackest stuff? Visit the Little Devil and watch Altaar from Norway. The mixture of noise and funeral doom featuring members of Jr. Ewing and Motorpsycho will shake this venue to its foundations. Slow is also Khuda, a duo from the UK that sometimes sounds sludgy, the other time psychedelic.

Sick of all these pseudo intellectual stuff? Watch the thrashcore/punkrockers Jesus of Spazzareth at the end of the day. They are as furious as Black Flag and Disfear. Other hardcore is brought in the Extase by Your Demise and Misery Signals. Both bands blend it with metal, all in an original way. Just between these two bands The Number Twelve Looks Like You chooses the difficult way by mixing Hardcore, Experimental rock and Death Metal.

If you are getting sick of all these heavy drums and guitars there’s the drone/ambient outfit Troum in the Paradox. They are one of the greatest acts in the modern drone/ambient world. Still searching for something special?

A combination of folk and ambient is made by Wardruna, a project with members of Gorgoroth. They play in Natuurtheater, a beautiful amphitheater in the forests of Oisterwijk in the surroundings of Tilburg. You have to go by car or take the special bus to watch them but I bet this ritualistic performance will be a special one.

Sunday 20-9

Sunday is a bit dissapointing comparing to Saturday. For people who are into Dark Industrial Ambient and Neofolk the Hall of Fame is the place to be. Deutsch Nepal and Der Blutharsch will perform there.

For those who see the world much brighter I can recommend Holy State from the UK who are playing early this day in the Batcave. Their indierock can be compared to Drive like Yehu and The Jesus Lizard. A bit heavier will be the nineties screamo/powerviolence from Crocus in the Little Devil. Tiny guys from the UK that have a lot of anger inside. Death Metal bands also have anger inside of them; Nox from the Hague is the closing act in the Extase with their nihilistic mix of old-school and modern technical Death Metal. The chaos they spread will leave you confused.

Just as most bands in this special. Succes with choosing your path at this year's Incubate.

Misery Index heeft nooit op het programma gestaan. (Misery Signals wel).

Verder erg benieuwd naar CELAN, met Chris Spencer (Unsane) op zang
